In the world of information security, the conversation often seems to revolve around risks, threats and incidents. Phishing, ransomware, data breaches: these are words we encounter every day in news reports and boardrooms. This is understandable, because the impact of a cyber attack can be enormous. But what if we turn the perspective around? What if we see cybersecurity not only as a shield against danger, but also as a source of opportunities and innovation?
I don't often venture to post on LinkedIn, let alone write a more substantive article. Nevertheless, I would like to share my experiences. I have the privilege of speaking with many clients, from SMEs to corporations in all sectors, and I increasingly notice that information security is seen as a necessary evil. Especially now that the Cyber Security Act (NIS2) is imminent in the Netherlands, I personally fear that too much emphasis will be placed on what is mandatory, rather than on the opportunities that arise when we embrace cybersecurity strategically.
Understanding risks remains the basis
No organisation can afford to ignore the risks. Identifying vulnerabilities, drawing up policies and training employees are crucial steps. Without this foundation, there is no room for growth. It is important that we know the threats so that we can deal with them with confidence.
From defence to value creation
Cybersecurity can be more than just a cost or a necessity. Consider:
- Trust as a competitive advantage: Customers are more likely to choose companies that demonstrably handle their data with care.
- Innovation through security: A robust security architecture makes it possible to launch new digital services faster and more securely.
- Strengthening collaboration: Transparency and shared standards in the chain ensure better relationships with partners and suppliers.
It is precisely in conversations with customers that I see that too little attention is often paid to this positive side. Meanwhile, companies that see security as an opportunity often grow faster and have a stronger position in their market.
Cybersecurity with a smile
By viewing security not only as a burden, but as an opportunity, a culture is created in which employees are proud of their role in protecting information. It makes the conversation lighter, more positive and future-oriented. Cybersecurity with a smile means that we take risks seriously, but at the same time are inspired by the opportunities that digital security offers.
Conclusion
Businesses must continue to invest in understanding and managing risks. But let's also highlight the other side: the opportunities that arise when information security becomes a strategic pillar. In this way, we are not only building a safer digital world, but also a stronger, more innovative and more trusted society.
